Can you intentionally drop a line drive
SS lets ball drop does not touch him in order to attempt to turn a double play. Umpire rules it was intentionally dropped batter is out, runner remains at 1st Was that the correct call? If he didn't touch the ball I would say double play. If the ss backs up to take the ball on a hop,Who says he has to run in to catch it. I say smart play. If he drops ball on purpose,we all know when this happens, batter out runner stays at first. This would be my stance. I do not play NSA, so am not aware of the rules, but I would be very surprised if the rules were different. If so, they should just put the Infield Fly rule in for any time there is a runner on first.
The reason they don't, is because if the hitter runs it out, there is little chance for a DP on most balls that are "allowed" to drop. Saw this in a D1 college game recently: Runner on first, one out. Soft line drive to shortstop. He moves to catch it, but intentionally drops it, steps on second base and throws over to first for the apparent double play.
I'm not sure what the exact call was, but the umpire said the runner was safe at second base. It could be that he said the ball was really caught, so the batter was out and there was no force at second. But it sure looked like a dropped ball to me - there was no control, it was not dropped on transition, etc. My question: is there any rule covering this?
Or will an umpire "manufacture" a call in order to prevent a cheap double play? Seemed like a pretty heads up play by the shortstop, though.
He is good - was recently invited to the Team USA trials. Original Post. A batter is out when an infielder intentionally drops a fair fly ball or line drive, with first, first and second, first and third, or first, second and third base occupied before two are out. The ball is dead and runner or runners shall return to their original base or bases. The ump in your case got it wrong. The batter should have been out, and the runner returned to first.
