Why should i detune my snowboard
This could be due to its tuning, or detuning. Detuning is a broad term that most people have heard from the freestyle world when riding features such as rails or boxes. That detuning is normally referencing the effective edge, in this blog we are talking about the nose and tail of the board.
Boards straight from a factory normally come with sharp degree edges around the whole board. These harsh points on the non-effective edges can disrupt the natural ride of the board by catching during various points of the carve.
This would give the board a bigger and stiffer feel. The best way to take down metal is with a file. To smooth the edge after a diamond stone can be used and finally a gummy stone to take off any burrs left by the file or diamond stone.
Making sure you are using your file in the proper direction, so it is biting into the metal, round the sharp edge to a dull point using the file in one direction.
Start with the Rough stone first. Then use the Soft stone to fine-tune the edges. Fine tune the edges by using the gummy stone on the bottom edges of the board, and on the side. Alternate between the bottom and side edges until you are happy with the feel.
Tuning Tip: You always want to finish off on the Side edge - This will remove any sharp edges from poking out and ensure that any sharp spots face down. Once you have finished smoothing the edges, the feeling you're looking for is a s harp and s lippery edge.
If your edges feel sharp and slippery, you are then ready for the next step, Waxing. Pay Yohann a visit at Underground Tuning. Keep that on the down low Riding Buttering Jumping Jibbing. By contact points, we mean the flat part of nose and tail of the ski or snowboard the makes contact with the ground when pointed downhill. The job of an edge is to cut into a surface and hold while weight is put against it, meaning sharp edges hold better and dull edges slide easier.
For example, if you only ride down groomed runs or your home mountain gets icy then you may want sharp edges since they will make your gear more responsive and help your edge hold for longer.
On the other hand, If you like to hit rails and boxes in the park then those sharp edges might get caught on rust or any other rough surface and send you to the ground. If this is the case, skiers will detune the edges around their feet and snowboarders will detune the edges around and between their feet. When skis and snowboards come out of the factory, their edges are sharp due to never being ridden on.
When a new board or pair of skis is given its first tune up, many shops will recommend detuning the contact points to keep the edges from catching unexpectedly and jerking the rider or skier around no matter what they prefer to ride. Otherwise, detuning is totally up to the type of riding you like and how you like to do it.
If you know exactly what you want, then you can detune your skis or snowboard using a course file, a gummy stone, and a diamond stone.
