What is the difference between oedipus and creon
Oedipus lashed out at Creon for betraying a kinsman He did so without any evidence or proof. He just did accused Creon without thinking about the consequences. Although Creon stands against rashness and unthinking now, he soon becomes another Oedipus. In Antigone, Creon portrays all the character traits that made Oedipus such a bad ruler. Creon proclaims that no person can bury Antigones brother, Polynices.
Soon enough however, a guard comes running in to tell him that Polynices has indeed been buried. Creon is furious. He immediately accuses the guard of burying him. You are a born nuisance 75 , he says, You squandered your life for money The guard summarizes Creons transformation from patient ruler to brash king when he says Oh its terrible when the one who does the judging judges things all wrong Creon, just like Oedipus, accused the guard of something he didnt do.
He lacked proof and he had little evidence, but he proclaimed him to death anyway. Oedipus and Creon are alike in yet another way. They both committed vile acts of hubris. Both of them went against the gods for feckless and pointless reasons. Oedipus committed hubris by insulting Tiresias.
He accuses Tiresias of betraying us, destroying Thebes Tiresias is a prophet of the gods. He is just telling Oedipus what he has seen. Tiresiass refusal to tell Oedipus his secrets only results in more name-calling and humiliation. Oedipus calls him the scum of the earth Oedipus is so enraged by his prophecies that he accuses him of helping to hatch the plot Oedipus suspects that Tiresias is being bribed.
Who primed you for this? Not your prophets trade , he says. Oedipus rashness lead him to accuse Tiresias, a prophet of the gods and a wise seer, that he is corrupt and a fraud. This is obviously insulting to the gods and leads to his downfall.
Creon himself commits an even greater act of hubris. He refuses to bury the body of Polynices, the brother of Antigone, who tried to attack Thebes. This is a direct violation of the gods and all their laws of death.
Euripides recounted this legend in his tragedy Medea. The second, the brother of Jocasta, was successor to Oedipus as king of Thebes. Who is Creon's wife in Antigone? Eurydice of Thebes. Why does Antigone kill herself? These are almost Antigone's last words. She killed herself because she could not bear to live even a moment longer once she had been thrown into that dark dungeon. Victims arouse hate. Antigone could not survive hate.
Who is Laius in Oedipus? Laius was the son of Labdacus. He was the father of Oedipus, by Jocasta, who killed him. Who is Ismene in Antigone? How did Creon come to power? Creon took over the throne because Oedipus' two sons, Eteocles and Polyneices, were too young to become rulers. As time passed, and the two sons aged, Eteocles claimed the throne for himself, exiling his older brother Polyneices. What happened to Eteocles and Polynices?
The rule passed to his sons Eteocles and Polynices. However, because of a curse from their father, the two brothers did not share the rule peacefully and died as a result, ultimately killing each other in battle for control of the city. We find that Oedipus is a good leader because he is honest, sympathetic, dependable and determined. On the other hand, Creon fails to sympathize with the citizen.
The fear and violence of his absolute power became detrimental to his leadership. Despite these differences between Oedipus and Creon, the leaders did share some qualities that influenced the way they ruled. Oedipus and Creon both ruled with pride. Each individual was proud of their actions and the way they lead the people of Thebes. At times they were so proud that they failed to believe what was being told to them.
Tiresias proclaims to Oedipus, "You are the curse, the corruption of the land" Sophocles Oedipus refuted the truth, "Aren't you appalled to start up such a story? You think you can get away with this? Similarly, Creon was warned by Tiresias in Antigone of the trouble that was to result from his injustice. Stubbornness brands you for stupidity-pride is a crime" Sophocles Creon failed to accept the information told to him by Tiresias, instead his pride prevailed until he admitted his wrongdoings at the end of the play, at which it was too late.
The town of Thebes was also ruled by both with stubbornness. Once they had an idea set in their minds nothing could change it. Each had a firm belief in what they thought. Creon sentenced Antigone to death, since she was the individual who gave her brother, Polynices, a proper burial.
Despite warnings from the town and Tiresias, Creon carried out the sentencing of his niece by sealing her in a cave. His stubborn character led to defiance of the Gods, which led to his downfall as King of Thebes.
In Oedipus the King, Oedipus goal was to save his people from the plague by removing the murderer, who was present in the town. Oedipus was stubborn and refused to see the clues which revealed the source of the plague.
